Description

The Regional Center for Training in Family Planning and Reproductive Health (RCT) was established in 1988 to provide reproductive health training that serves the needs of North Africa and the Middle East. It is a public organization affiliated with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine at Ain Shams University, Cairo Egypt. Currently, RCT conducts reproductive health and family planning clinical training courses and activities at its center in Cairo. RCT plans to expand its activities to offer on-site training in Middle East and Africa. In addition to the coming list of courses, special courses developed in response to specific requests can be tailored and conducted either in Egypt or in host countries in the region in two ways: Modifying regular courses to make them more appropriate to needs of trainees and Working with prospective trainees to assess their training needs and developing new courses to meet these needs.

RCT’s partners includes the Ministry of Health and Population; Health Insurance Organization; Teaching Hospital Organization; Clinical Services Improvement Project; Junior Medical Doctors Association; Egyptian Red Crescent Organization; Egyptian Family Planning Association; Management Science for Health (MSH); World Health Organization (WHO); IPPF; European Union; and Ain Shams University.

Track Record

RCT has played a pivotal role in training staff for the Egyptian Population Program given that over the past 14 years it has conducted over 373 training courses and has trained 6964 graduates from the Ministry of Health and Population, Health Insurance Organization, Teaching Hospital Organization, Clinical Services Improvement Project, and Junior Medical Doctors Association.

All of RCT’s training is competency-based and utilizes effective adult education methodology. RCT also maintains a computerized consultant roster of professionals who provide expertise in family planning and reproductive health.

Ain Shams University outpatient clinic also provides RCT with a unique laboratory and opportunity for practical training. This clinic serves about 1,400 family planning clients a month and opportunities to practice newly learned skills, which are an important part of most RCT courses. RCT in collaboration with Management Sciences for Health (MSH, Boston) conducted “Managing Successful Training Programs” and “Quality Assurance Programs”.

On an annual basis, RCT conducts the Contraceptive Technology Update conference; Needs Assessment workshop; RCT graduates meeting, and the NORPLANT® conference. In addition to its training courses, RCT also offers technical assistance to family planning and reproductive health organizations primarily in the following areas: family planning and reproductive health training programs; family planning training center of reproductive health and family planning curriculum development; Identification of local short term consultants using RCT's computerized consultant roster and establishment of training management systems for family planning projects.
