Description
The Institute for Global Dialogue is a think tank concerned with key issues in international relations/affairs, and how those affect South Africa, the SADC region and Africa as a whole. IGD was established in 1994 as the Foundation for Global Dialogue, and was transformed in 1999 in line with the developments in South Africa and the world. Today, IGD has established itself as a valuable institution that has built experience and contributed to research and analysis on international affairs. As South Africa moved to broaden its focus on the continent, so has IGD broadened its mandate and mission, as well as resources. IGD has put emphasis on the analysis of challenges that confront SA, SADC and Africa in the world characterized by fast changing global environment.
IGD has established itself as a resource for intellectual and research analysis on the political, economic, social and cultural underpinnings of contemporary international relations. It is involved in a number of programs and projects. The South Africa program focuses on South Africa’s foreign policy, civil society and the SADC region, among other pertinent issues. The Southern Africa program focuses on regional cooperation and other matters affecting the SADC region. On Africa as a whole, focus is placed on the continent’s development challenges as well as Pan-African institutions such as the AU and NEPAD, and cross-cutting concerns such as HIV-AIDS. These projects are being implemented in Sudan, Cote D’Ivoire, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, DRC, and other African countries.
IGC also runs a globally-focused program, which looks at South Africa and the global order, South-South relations, reform of the UN and financial institutions, among other issues. In addition, it publishes occasional papers, regular newsletters (Global Insight, Global Dialogue) and books.
