Description
Health Systems Research for Reproductive Health and Health Care Reforms in the Eastern and Southern African Region program was started in February 1989 with the assistance of GTZ. The program is located in Zimbabwe at the Blair Research Institute, but is a regional venture. Activities are carried out in 13 SADC countries—Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe—as well as Kenya, Madagascar and Uganda.
The program’s overall objective is to strengthen health systems research in the Eastern and Southern African Region, within the different countries, and at an inter-country level. This regional approach contributes to the strengthening of communication and collaboration among neighboring countries ("South-South cooperation") with special emphasis laid on practical, decentralized research, which can be directly translated into action.
Partners in the program include the Planning and Family Planning Departments of the respective Ministries of Health, which maintain close relationships to Universities and other Research Institutions. There is also close cooperation with WHO Sub-Region III in Harare and Commonwealth Regional Health Community Secretariat, Arusha as regional coordinating bodies. German Development Cooperation (GTZ) assistance ended in 2001.
