Description
AidAfrica provides humanitarian assistance to the poorest and most needy people in Africa. Since most food is cooked and since most people in the world lack an improved stove and adequate fuel, it introduced the Rocket Stove which uses one half of the fuel of the open fire and produces one half of the fumes from that one half amount of fuel. Other cooking technologies such as the insulated cooking box and solar cooking are also considered. AidAfrica is working in IDP refugee camps in Northern Uganda and Darfur, Sudan where there are more than two million refugees.
Track record
Among Aid Africa’s milestones is the introduction of the Rocket Stove, which uses less fuel which means that people can cook food using the few roots and twigs they can find. For refugees, this means fewer trips outside their camps and less risk of death or bodily harm. The stove is also safer and minimizes the risk of fires.
Aid Africa also teaches refugees new cooking technologies. The concentration of people in a refugee camp provides unique opportunity to teach a new cooking technology to many people motivated to learn and transmit the knowledge. The organization limits indoor air pollution exposure and monitors health from pollution. The basics of this are understood. While future research in understanding pollution and its effects is important, the immediate need is to reduce pollution. AidAfrica’s intent is to introduce stoves that can benefit people.
