Description
ANEN was founded in 1982 to strengthen the capacity of African NGOs on environment and development issues, facilitate sharing of experiences and skills and provide a link between them, their governments and international organizations. Members include 45 African countries. Its objectives include strengthening communication and cooperation between African NGOs and governments, building links between African NGO's and those with similar interests in the rest of the world and facilitating active participation of NGO's in environmental and development projects.
Track Record
Grass roots organizations are increasingly taking on the protection of the environment and health themselves. In Nairobi, Kenya, the 14-year-old African NGOs Environment Network (ANEN) now has 430 members from 45 African countries. ANEN works with the United Nations Program of Action for Africa Recovery and Economic Development and publishes a bimonthly magazine called EcoAfrica, the ANEN newsletter and NGO directories.
