Description
The African Governance Monitoring and Advocacy Project is a project of the Soros Foundation Network’s four foundations in Africa (OSIWA, OSISA, OSF-SA, and OSIEA). The initiative aims to monitor and promote compliance by African states especially relating to the requirements of good governance, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. As the African Union came into being, so did the focus on making governments and civil society accountable. AfriMAP was established to audits performance of these institutions.
AfriMAP focuses on three key areas: Justice Sector and the Rule of Law, Political Participation and Democracy, and Delivery of Public Services. In these program areas, AfriMAP seeks to:
- Produce reports on achievements and challenges of complying with the international standards in the area of human rights, rule of law and accountable governance;
- Support and promote the active engagement of civil society in their roles as monitors of governments;
- Complement and engage in critical dialogue with the African Union and its various structures and programs, in particular, the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) and the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM).
So far AfriMAP has conducted a number of research projects, including in Malawi, South Africa, Senegal, Mozambique and Ghana in the three thematic areas (popular participation, public services, and justice sector). In addition, AfriMAP has commissioned reports on the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Good Governance. Recently, AfriMAP has also commissioned papers on the ‘Grand Debate on the Union Government’. Most of the reports are finalized through a consultative process that includes members of civil society and government.
